The SLC Series: A day in the life with Stella from Stella Pilates

Introducing the Superette Leisure Club Series. Meet Stella Mitchinson – founder and trainer for Stella Pilates. She shares with us what a day in the life looks like, what health and wellbeing means to her and how she describes her personal style.

Tell us a little about you? What keeps you busy?
Hi, my name is Stella I’ve been working as a Pilates instructor for the last 10 years both in NZ & overseas. I started up my own Pilates business (Stella Pilates) when I returned from London just just over 3 years ago. I started off mainly doing at home Mobile training but have recently added a boutique studio into the mix! 

Monday to Friday is usually pretty busy with training clients, the days are often long – but I love it! Most days I teach around 6-8 sessions so I have to be pretty organised with my schedule. Everyday is quite different which keeps it interesting. Private training sessions are either at clients homes or at the new Studio. 

Walk us through your average daily routine from start to finish….
I try to stick with a regular morning routine as much as possible. usually I get up at 6am have a warm water with lemon to kickstart the body, followed by a protein berry smoothie & some breakfast. I’m a big fan of a morning coffee so always grab one on my way to the studio usually from my local cafe Dizengoff. 

I usually start training clients at 7am & like to bring snacks with me to the studio to have on the go throughout the day especially when it’s busy. I try to fit in my own workout around early afternoon & usually go home for a couple of hours to get lunch & to walk my Pug Beau. Some days I’m home at 5pm other days later around 7.30pm. Usually the hubby does most of the dinner cooking which is pretty ideal as I’m not the greatest chef & he loves to cook! 

Do you have any morning routine non-negotiables?
Coffee!! It always helps to make those early morning starts more enjoyable, I’m naturally not much of a morning person even though it’s part of the job! I always like to spend some time in the morning going over the schedule for the day & client lesson plans. Everything runs a lot smoother when I’ve done this morning prep.

What’s your approach to health and wellbeing?
From a fitness perspective I think it’s a game changer when you realise you don’t have to be extreme to get results just consistent ‘Work smarter not harder’  is my favourite motto. In terms over overall health & wellbeing finding balance is always key, although challenging at times! I find when I slow down enough to listen to the body it’s pretty clever at letting you know what it needs. 

What’s your favourite kind of workout?
Pilates!! It really does provided the most ideal combo of strength & flexibility. I especially love when the workout is customised to what your body needs, as this helps to improve any imbalances & usually you start to see & feel noticeable results pretty quickly but without stressing the body out. I’m also a big fan of walking, I try to get outdoors for a walk most days. It compliments the Pilates training so well & provides some steady cardio into the mix.  

What makes you feel confident?
I feel my best when I’ve made the time to schedule in my own training workouts. It’s so easy when you get busy to struggle to find the time to fit it in, but when I do make it a priority it’s amazing how much more confident & energised I feel – the best mood booster! 

How do you like to unwind / hit reset when you get a spare hour to yourself?
I love hanging out with with my fur baby Beau. Also I will often spend some time at a cafe making notes or journaling most days. I’ve always found this such a great way to realign & focus the mind – very similar to meditation. 

Who do you look to for inspiration?
I’ve always been inspired by people who are innovative & following their own authentic path especially in business. Before Covid times I used to find so much inspo from travel. Every year I would spend time checking out what was happening overseas in the fitness & wellness industry. On Insta I always love Lisa Hubbard in LA for all things Pilates. For fashion & overall style Victoria Beckham & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are two favs. 

Describe your style in three words…
Modern. Classic. Sporty. 

What’s on high rotation in your wardrobe right now? 
Anine Bing – Lizzie slides, these are actually the most comfy slides I’ve ever purchased. Also living in oversized shirts, love the Anine Bing Mika shirt in blue. Denim shorts are always being worn especially on beach days & love the PE Nation endurance bike shorts for those summer workouts.
