Your Super Guide to Womenswear Trends

Meet our very talented womenswear buyer, Josie who has been bringing the newness and the excitement to Superette’s Womanswear category for more than 10 years! We caught up with Josie to chat what a typical day looks like, the wardrobe essentials worth investing in, Spring/Summer trends for 2021, how she describes her personal style and her favourite new pieces from Superette.

What does a typical day as a buyer look like?
Every day is different which is why I love what I do. I am very grateful to be with a business that encourages growth, to be constantly evolving and taking risks. My days will either start with store visits or our company trade meeting, sharing newness with our incredible store managers, or catching up with our digital, ecommerce and planning teams to discuss looks and general stock related conversations. I’ll then get stuck in replying to my emails that popped up overnight from our amazing international brands and suppliers.

Some might find it surprising that a large part of my role is actually reporting. It’s not all travel and viewing beautiful ranges. It’s imperative to understand sales and store data, what’s working and what’s not. This will fill my morning. I will also pop into our beautiful Superette International store in Newmarket – it’s such a peaceful and calming space, I love seeing the team and taking them through new brands and products that are arriving daily. So many amazing new International brands are coming! Watch this space.

I generally try to schedule my showings in the afternoon. This involves selecting and curating seasonal buys, and making sure those selections create a fluid story that tie in with our other selects. A bit of travel is involved to view new ranges, to discuss current sell through and to maintain and nurture supplier and brand relationships. I am definitely missing our Sydney trips that we would do most months, for now Zoom will have to do! If my viewings are local I will aim to do these back to back and these will take me to the end of the day. It’s always a busy one! I will wear a trainer or mule most days if I am running around.

I aim to make time for the creative part of my role in the afternoon such as trend forecasting and hunting for new brands for our Superette and Superette International stores. I love keeping up to date with trends and movements around the globe, street style and checking in with what our International brands are doing.

What are the key wardrobe essentials all women should invest in?

Oversized Shirting
you can wear this dressed up with a french tuck into a tailored pant, or dressed down worn open over sweat shorts and a tank. A super versatile piece of clothing. Start with neutral colouring so you can pair your shirt back with all items, and colours in your wardrobe.

Structured Outerwear
A blazer and longer-line coat are my go-to’s for throwing on, and instantly elevating any look. Think of these styles as your new version of a jumper. They are just as effective for wearing over tee’s and tank coming into the warmer weather, not to mention a forever classic that won’t date. There is also something about a shoulder pad that instantly give you those Superwomen feels that you can take on anything.

Choosing a style that works for you and that you feel great in, can take some perseverance. Try on styles you wouldn’t normally go for as this teaches you how to dress for your body shape. You might be surprised what you end up finding as your perfect fit. A great jean can take you everywhere from Work to those spontaneous evening drinks.

What are the key fashion trends for Spring/Summer 21?

Trend: Go Bold

Strong hues in cool undertones are the power force this season. Think bubble-gum pinks, grass greens, sour citrus and strong cobalt blues. These colours will instantly lift any mood and complement your wardrobe this season.

Trend: Sorbet

A pretty and playful look this season. Colours so sweet you’ll want to eat them right up – think peachy tones and soft lilacs. Mix your sweet pieces with ripped, loose denim for a clever juxtaposition, or go all out in matchy matchy for a statement outfit!

Trend: Body Con

A form-fitting silhouette ranging from ribbed, stretch comfort to cut-out placements for a party-worthy look. This slinky number is one we are welcoming after our wintery months of layering. Key details also include drawstrings to adjust the fit, textural finishes and of course cut-outs to give your body con dress an element of surprise for any occasion.
