French fashion brand Magali Pascal is known for bohemian sophistication that translates easily from beach to bar – linen staples, light fabrics and easy-to-wear shirt dresses that embody relaxed resort-luxe. Magali Pascal the woman exudes the same bohemian sophistication. Born in Paris, Pascal now lives in Bali with her family; her photographer husband Matt Neville and their almost-two-year-old twins, Van and Marcelle.

After an 18-month build the couple recently completed their dream home, a tropical haven with French and Caribbean design influences. “The day we moved in was very special,” says Pascal. “The house that we had built from scratch was a reality – the open space, the white shutters, the infinity swimming pool. We were in awe and felt so lucky to be able to call it home. In fact, we’re still in awe every day.”

On her home’s location:
The house is in a coastal village surrounded by palm trees, about 100 metres from a black-sand beach. The land is absolutely magical – it overlooks never-ending rice fields that reach the horizon. From the moment we first saw it, we just knew it had to be ours.

On the design brief:
We were inspired by French and Caribbean architectural styles; large open spaces, high ceilings and lots of white shutters. I wanted to make sure our home was calming and neutral, with white space and wooden accents throughout.

On her favourite room:
The open-plan living area – it has incredible light in the morning that floods the house. It’s the heart and soul of the home, overlooking the swimming pool and rice fields with a gorgeous wooden veranda all around. We spend a lot of time there.

On the challenges of building in Bali:
Things take a lot longer here and sometimes don’t turn out exactly as you expect, but that’s all part of the experience. I’ve been in Bali since 2002 and I have a grasp on the language, so that was a big help.

On interior decorating:
My husband [Matt Neville] and I designed most of the furniture ourselves; we worked with local Balinese artisans to build it, so everything is custom-made especially for our home. Most of the art in the house is Matt’s photography from our travels together, including his latest work, which was taken on our trip to Los Angeles last year. It is almost abstract, with earthy tones. It creates a very calming feel in the home and really compliments the white walls and polished cement.
