It’s that time of year again where everyone is getting back into the grind after a relaxing summer break filled with sunshine and great company. Most of the Super Fam were lucky enough to enjoy an epic summer escape away from the hustle and bustle of the city, so we chatted with some of our HQ staff to get the lowdown on where they spent their summer break and what essentials they packed…
I spent the first part of the summer break helping out in the Ponsonby store until New Year’s Eve. It was really good to catch up with some of the regular customers I used to see all the time when I was there every day and it really reminded me how much fun working in a retail environment can be when you’re dealing with such awesome people.
I spent the first week of the new year in Melbourne, working on my music with friends from when I lived there and people I’ve met through music since I left. It was super productive and I’m really excited to release what I’ve been working on when the time comes! Of course, I spent a lot of time indulging in the amazing restaurants and brunch spots that Melbourne has as well!
For Christmas I went home to Wanaka. We unintentionally chased the sun perfectly and were lucky with the weather. We ate, drank and decided to try and walk it all off with a trek to Diamond Lake which I’ve always wanted to do. My dad and his brothers and sisters used to ice-skate on it when they were little. It’s on the way to Treble Cone Ski Field, and takes 1 hour up and 40 mins down. I loved it because you can see another part of Lake Wanaka you don’t normally see, with amazing views of both the lake and its islands. Successfully completed, we headed back home for a cold beer in the sun. Dreamy.
My summer holiday was spent at Medlands Beach, Great Barrier Island. A 30 minute flight or 2-3 hour boat ride, it’s just that bit further away from Auckland City making it a special & secluded place (or so I like to think). It’s beautiful white sand beach and surf leaves you no choice but to relax all day, followed by evening drinks on the beach and dinner with friends & family. When travelling to the island, my essential pieces are a bikini, beach wrap, sunnies & a hat. These are on high rotation for days on the beach and also keep me protected from that harsh NZ sun!
For the summer break we ventured up north to a small beach named Martin’s Bay with a close group of friends to bring in the new year. It was super relaxing, not being that far out of Auckland (approx. an hour) but you still felt like you were in holiday mode at a secluded beach. We managed to venture out and do a wine tasting + sculpture trail at Brick Bay Winery trail with it being situated quite close to Matakana. The rest of the time was spent at the beach where I spent it in my summer go-to – denim cut-offs with a tee or tank and some Birks. The highlights -fireworkss on the beach when it hit midnight on New Years Eve, freshly caught fish from the ocean for dinners and being able to have an outdoor shower thanks to a hot summer!
My all-time favourite holiday destination is Waimarama Beach in Hawkes Bay – you just can’t beat it! We love staying at Black Barn’s White House, it’s the ultimate beach pad and is kitted out with everything you could possibly need. We spend our days riding around the vineyards and afternoon dips in the ocean, followed by delicious feasts fresh from the BBQ. I was living in my Sands Shirt Dress and Beau Coop Sandals, perfect for going straight from lunch at Craggy Range back to chilling on a bean bag with a book!
