Intimate With Anine Bing

Singer, model and fashion designer extraordinaire, Anine Bing has nurtured her brand from a simple blog into a style empire. Adored by the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Anine’s understated aesthetic instantly struck a chord with Hollywood’s A-list. Not limited to the U.S (or celebrities), the Danish-born mother of two has flourished internationally with over 300 stockists from around the globe. We caught up with Anine to discuss how she balances motherhood while being the epitome of a ‘Girl Boss’, and what advice she has to offer those who also want to achieve it all…

How do you manage to find a healthy balance between work and home life?

I won’t lie, it’s definitely hard at times. And it’s important to me that I communicate that with other women who are in the same boat – working full time and being a mom – that it’s hard for everyone, no matter how easy you make it seem on Instagram! The thing is, I love what I do and I love being a mom, so the hard work pays off because I feel very blessed and grateful for getting to live the life that I want and built for myself. When I’m at work, I try really hard to just focus on work and be present in meetings, and then when I’m home I try to put my phone down and shut down to really be there for my family – no iPads at the dinner table, walks around the neighbourhood or playtime outside You have to make the effort to be present in both areas of your life.

International model, mother and business owner, how have your career priorities changed over the years?

I haven’t modelled in over 10 years because my focus has been building this business with my husband, our CEO. And then came babies along the way. Because the business and the babies happened at the same time essentially, it really encouraged me to find a balance between both of my jobs – mom and designer. Being a mom is something I was truly born to do, so that feels like my natural innate job, whereas being a designer is something I feel passionate about, so it’s my chosen job. And learning how to balance the two has been the biggest priority for me over the years.

What advice would you give to others out there who are trying to achieve it all?

Achieving it all is impossible! Instead, set some realistic short term and long term goals for yourself, and do one thing at a time to achieve those goals. Always ask for help if you need some guidance, build an amazing team even if it’s just one person who acts as your creative right-hand, and I always say write things down – it has helped me over the years to stay inspired and organized.

What’s the best piece of life advice you’ve ever received and who was it from?

Don’t listen to the naysayers who have negative opinions about your life choices. If I would have listened to them I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today. I always followed my own instinct, my dream, and always had big goals for myself in life… and I hope anyone looking to start a business or start a new chapter in their life of any kind can approach it the same way.

The recent release of your kids line is a really exciting step for Anine Bing Official, how did this develop?

It really started with my kids. My daughter, Bianca, always asked to wear my clothes, so my husband and I had this passion to bring a kids line to life early on that really started at home. When the timing was right and when the ANINE BING brand was in a really strong place, we knew we were ready to extend into Childrenswear. It was all about blending comfort and cool together so that kids could feel cool but also comfortable enough to run around and be kids. That’s why the line is made up of jackets, tee shirts, joggers, and leggings. We never wanted it to be overly precious, but instead really easy and fun so that both parents and kids would love.

Do your children have any say in the design process?

100%.. They love to weigh in, especially my daughter who loves fashion and clothes. Benjamin, my son, is such a fan of the clothes and always likes to mix and match on his own for school. And they’re both the best fit models a designer could ask for!

What do your kids think of your job?

Benjamin doesn’t reflect too much about it, but Bianca has come with me to the office since she was a little baby and she loves helping me out in the design studio. She always has fun ideas and says she wants to be a fashion designer or a doctor when she grows up.. let’s see what she chooses…

Who’s your fashion muse?

I don’t think I have just one muse, I get so inspired by all the women in my life and random girls on the street, especially from travelling in Europe and seeing all the amazing street style over there.

What’s your ‘treat yourself’ moment?

I’ve been known to have a pretty big collection of vintage Chanel bags… I can’t help it, I love them so much and I love to collect them knowing I will pass it on to my daughter. They’re just beautiful and classic and timeless… But beyond that, I love all things beauty… La Mer products can be pricey but in the end, it is such an investment for your skin.

Goals for 2019?

Continuing to be the best I can be at home and at work. Building the business and growing into different categories hopefully and growing our international presence…but, in the end, trying to stay present in 2018!
