There is a reason that these frames will never go away – because of their enduring cool factor, and the fact they are suited to just about everyone.  The humble aviator has played a starring role in many iconic films – from a 1980s Tom Cruise as Maverick in Top Gun (Ray Ban aviator sales jumped 40% after their appearance in the film) to Johnny Depp’s legendary portrayal of writer Hunter S. Thompson in Fear in Loathing in Las Vegas. The classic teardrop shape, originally designed for fighter pilots in the 1930s to reduce distortion, minimise glare and span the field of a pilot’s peripheral vision have gone on to be one of the most important sunglass shapes in history, all the while still serving largely the same purpose as they did ‘way back when’. Check out the new reinterpreted aviator styles of the season.

The good thing about a pair of retro-looking shades is that their throwback cool tends to work on everyone. Think two-tone, tortoiseshell, cat-eye and mixed metal styles to impart a sense of iconic old-school elegance.
