The three things to love about winter

winter
Winter is on its way: Just because the mercury is dropping doesn’t mean spirits have to. After getting the wardrobe sector sorted and putting our new winter garments into play, here are some of the things the team at Superette look forward to most about the chilly season.

Hot Soup

There is little better comfort on a chilly winter’s day than a hearty bowl of delicious soup – served with a side of crusty hot bread of course! As our daily lunch go-to throughout the cold months, we’ve done our fair share of taste testing across the board at our local cafes. Our favourite picks?
Il Buco on Ponsonby Road for a daily changing menu of delicious flavours such as Thai kumura, broccoli and blue cheese and pea and mint.
Dizengoff for their unfailingly satisfying creamy chicken soup (the star of the menu throughout winter).
Wellington’s Plentiful Deli in Mt Victoria, an old-fashioned style deli that serves takeaway soup by the cup. On a recommendation from Mon our Wellington manager, we now can’t go past the kumura, chipotle and sweet corn flavour.

Bluff Oysters

Admittedly, the next month or so will see this highlight slowly coming to an end but until then, we’re indulging in every opportunity we can to savour the delicious Bluff oysters while they are still around. From when the season kicks off at the end of March, we just can’t get enough of the sought after shellfish. Second best to making the trip down to the seaside town of Bluff to revel in the annual Oyster Festival festivities (and see how many of the delicacies we can physically attempt to consume) is enjoying a dozen freshly flown in Bluff Oysters at Ponsonby Road’s SPQR
Winter Getaways
As much as we love the idea of jetting away to somewhere tropical to escape the dreary season, our favourite parts of the country are some that just as enjoyable during the cold. We’re making the most of it by taking long weekend trips out of the city to experience the best of them. We love…

Arrowtown, for its picturesque surrounds and old-worldly town feeling. It’s the perfect spot to retreat to for few days downtime after a week of hitting the slopes in Queenstown or Wanaka. Before you arrive, it’s absolutely essential you stop for lunch on the way at Amesfield vineyard. Dinner and drinks should then follow at Arrowtown’s famous Saffron restaurant and then onto mulled wine by the fire at the cute rustic bar, Blue Door.

Wharekaukau Lodge in the Wairarapa. Just an hour and a half out of Wellington, Wharekaukau Lodge is easily one of the most breathtaking spots in the country. The luxury lodge and country estate is set on huge station (which continues to run as a working sheep station) and has various cottages dotted amongst the grounds available for hire. Book it in for a luxury weekend away or simply head there for a day and enjoy a long lunch at the very grand main house. The magical spot is truly one of Wellington’s best-kept secrets.

Any of Auckland’s West Coast beaches are a favourite destination for a Sunday drive. Rug up warm and head out for a walk to enjoy the amazing coastal surrounds of Piha, Karekare or Bethells beach. On the drive home, make sure you stop in for a bite to eat at The Refreshment Room on Scenic Drive, Titarangi. Providing its not raining, we suggest you time your journey right so you can take a table on the deck at dusk, which overlooks the vast expanse of the Waitakere bush, and enjoy the west coast sunsets at their very best.
