Banks Journal Flagship Store: Los Angeles

Founded in 2013 Banks Journal is a modern clothing label inspired by coastal living and a love of modern design. Having just completed their very first bricks and mortar flagship store in Row DTLA LA, we took a look back at how far they’ve come.

Infused with a unique blend of Japanese and Australian heritage thanks to its founders, these contrasting perspectives of the world come together as Banks Journal to create the contemporary look and feel of the brand. Ingrained with a deep respect for their natural surroundings, Banks Journal strives to utilize as many environmentally friendly materials as possible, from recycled polyester to organic cotton, throughout each season.

Blending clean and minimal aesthetics with natural materials near LA’s Arts District, the contemporary space reflects all key values that the brand clearly represents. Working with design firm West of West, the new space seeks to blend the sustainable clothing brand’s Australian and Japanese roots alongside its overall coastal influence and appeal. The store’s main attraction is an eye-catching ceiling installation constructed of 1000 linear feet of wood, inspired by traditional Japanese woodworking.

“Opening our first retail location provides us with an amazing opportunity to showcase our brand’s story of using sustainable and organic materials in a way that can relate to our customers. Working with West of West enabled us to have a heightened attention to design and detail for the store’s interior, something that we strive for with each garment we create.”

The 1,000 square foot retail space is housed in the historic 1900’s building previously inhabited by American Apparel. The area has now been repurposed into a modern shopping and dining experience known as The ROW DTLA. Alongside the Banks Journal clothing, the new flagship offers a curated selection of vintage rugs, vinyl, design books and products from like-minded brands.
