About the people, made for the people, this Sydney based brand is rising up the ranks according to their latest feature in Highsnobiety. With their trashed and moth-bitten treatment, vintage aesthetic and unisex appeal, The People Vs. have established quite a name, and we’re totally on board for the ride.
A little more than a year ago, The People Vs. made the move to join the Superette fam. With their unique approach and unfinished-perfection, these guys offered a fresh perspective on street style fashion, that we just had to be a part of. Fast forward to present day and their Australasian presence is steadily growing. We caught up with the team to uncover their success and find out what’s up next for this epic brand.
Who are the people?
The People Vs. is the story of the streets and the people who occupy them. We are a voice for the anti-establishment, creating vintage inspired streetwear for the moment.
How did The People Vs. become an idea and then a reality?
Our dream was first born back in 2013. The global streetwear movement was on the rise, but it was this super clean jogger pant look, something us and our mates just couldn’t connect with. We were 90’s kids brought up on a fusion of art, rock, & surf punk. We just wanted to wear our vintage tees, ripped jeans, beaten connies. So we figured f*** it. Let’s just make our own. If we want to wear it, then surely others do too. And so the journey began….
Favourite pieces for the season?
It has to be the Motor Leather Jacket. It’s sleek but evil.
Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Karen O, Siouxsie Sioux, Dylan Rieder, River Phoenix & Robert Smith.
Every wardrobe should have?
The majority of the collection is designed for both guys and girls, what was the idea behind a unisex collection?
As a brand and creative you are always looking for that sense of individualism to set you apart from the rest. Grunge is timeless. The aesthetic of our vintage inspired nostalgia lends itself to both guys & girls. You now find that favourite used tee and wear it to death.
How long did it take to perfect your signature moth-bitten treatment?
We originally launched in Bali with a boutique on the streets of Seminyak before relocating the operation down to Australia. In those early years, we trawled opp-shops for our vintage favourites and spent countless hours in our wash houses perfecting the signature holes and destroyed detailing we have become renowned for.
Every single garment we make is made in strict numbers and individually distressed by hand with its own hole, pattern making it a collector 1-of-1 piece. We are still constantly evolving with each collection and perfecting our beaten moth treatments. The best is still to come.
What’s next for The People Vs.?
Our new destroyed denim capsule. More trips to Bali. More Art. More installations. More Parties. Another Australian Flagship. Our new bespoke jewellery and suede boot collection. A collaboration with our favourite psych rock band and a visit to the land of the Long White Cloud to see Superette, very soon.
