We chatted to the lovely Zoë from Zoe & Morgan about their latest collection, HUIA…
What inspired the HUIA range?
Each season is inspired by a place we have visited and we’ve never done a collection on New Zealand, a lot of inspiration comes from our free childhood, and that’s what has set up the foundation for our business now, and the way we choose to operate our lives. The Piwakawaka ear jackets are selling fast already! These are inspired by the playful nature of our adorable native bird, the fantail, Piwakawaka. A flirtatious and nimble mover, these earrings are my personal favourite, as you can wear the studs alone, or attach the tail and dress up your ears, mood depending.
Where did the name HUIA come from?
HUIA is an extinct bird, It was native to NZ and it’s death was due to it’s popularity and celebrity like status back in the day. Worn by women in their hair and men tucked into their hats. Our version has been hand carved, and the small studs can curve up or down the ear. You decide on styling…
Describe the aesthetic of the new range.
This is actually my favourite collection. When we styled the look book, we kept the art direction really minimal to highlight the detailing in the pieces. The collections aesthetic is delicate yet powerful. Detailed yet subtle. All the pieces can be styled with casual daywear or dressed up. It’s easy jewellery to wear.
What is one thing most people don’t know about the brand?
That we started the business in Primrose Hill London, and the first cheque I received (yes cheque ..we started 10 years ago!) was from Claudia Schiffer.
Describe a typical day for you.
Well a normal day for me is; take my lil darlings up the road to school (we have a walking bus) get a smoothie from Ponsonby Central and zoom in to work. Our shop is always busy as it’s our studio also. We all stop and eat lunch together which is usually made by me! I normally head home for mama duties, or stay in town to meet with friends. We are in the City Works Depot, so lots of good options close by.
This is quite different to Ruth who has our shop in London, she bikes into work along the canal, and goes out to cool events all the time!
Morgan has been in Ibiza for three months, his normal days consist of going to a beach, doing yoga, and dancing. Grrr!
What’s the last thing you googled?
A family trip to Bali for this October.
